Migrate Google Drive Without Downloading via rclone

I just moved 30.6 GB and 3,687 files from one Google account to another in 57 minutes — without downloading a single file to my PC. No Google Takeout, no ZIP files, no "storage full" errors.

But it wasn't smooth. I hit every classic error: winget not recognized, rclone not valid for this OS, 16 duplicate-file errors, and 44 "differences found" during verification.

This post is the exact playbook I wish I had — including the PowerShell script, the commands that actually work on Windows 11, and how to fix duplicates that break rclone.

Why Not Use Google's Built-in Transfer?

Google's "Transfer ownership" only works for Google Workspace admins. For personal Gmail accounts, you're stuck with:

• Takeout (downloads everything, breaks folder structure)
• Shared Drive trick (15GB/day limit)
• Manual download/upload (takes days)

Server-side copy with rclone is different. Google moves files inside its own data centers. Your internet is only used for authentication.

What You'll Need

Step 1: Install rclone Correctly (Avoid the "not valid" Error)

Most tutorials tell you to run winget install rclone. That fails on 40% of PCs.

Do this instead: Manual download ensures you get the right architecture.

1. Go to rclone.org/downloads 2. DO NOT click ARM or 386. Click Windows - Intel/AMD 64 Bit 3. Extract the ZIP. Inside is rclone.exe (~55 MB) 4. Create a folder: C:\Users\YourName\Desktop\DriveMigrate 5. Move rclone.exe into that folder

Test it:

You should see os/arch: amd64. If you see "not valid for this OS," you downloaded the wrong file.

Step 2: Authorize Both Accounts

Open PowerShell in that folder (Shift+Right-click → Open PowerShell window here).

Old account:

Browser opens → log into OLD Gmail → Allow. You'll see Got code in PowerShell.

New account:

Repeat for NEW Gmail.

Your tokens are stored in %APPDATA%\rclone\rclone.conf. You only do this once.

Step 3: Find What to Exclude

My old drive had a massive hg Flutter build folder I didn't want to copy. List top-level folders:

Step 4: The Copy Command That Works

Flags explained:

• --drive-server-side-across-configs → Google-to-Google copy, no download
• --transfers 8 → 8 files at once (safe for API limits)
• --exclude → skips your build/cache folder
• --progress → live speed/ETA
