Meta Astryx: Rust-Powered Successor to React Native?
Meta open-sourced Astryx — a Rust runtime replacing React Native's JS bridge. I built a hello-world and analyzed what it means for cross-platform.

9-minute read · October 2026
Meta dropped Astryx into the open a few weeks ago and the internet has been arguing ever since. Some call it "React Native done right." Others call it "Fabric 2 with better marketing." I spent a weekend with the repo. Here's my honest read.
What Astryx Actually Is
- A Rust core compiled to native binaries for iOS and Android.
- A declarative UI layer that looks a lot like React but compiles ahead of time.
- Zero JS bridge. The messaging bottleneck that hobbled React Native for a decade is just… gone.
- Interop with existing native modules (Kotlin, Swift) via generated bindings.
Hello World, Actually
#[component] fn App() - Element { let count = usestate(|| 0); view! { <Column padding=16 <Text size=24{ format!("Count: {}", count) }</Text <Button onpress=move || count.set(count.get() + 1) "Tap me" </Button </Column } }
If you've used Dioxus or Leptos, this feels familiar. If you've only used React Native, the ergonomics are a jump — but the perf story is real. My hello-world app was 62% smaller than the RN equivalent and the tap-to-render latency was under 8ms.
Where It Wins
- Startup time. Cold start on my Pixel 6 was ~200ms vs ~700ms for RN.
- Battery. No JS engine idling.
- Type safety end to end. Rust's compiler catches classes of bugs RN would silently ship.
Where It Hurts (Today)
- Ecosystem is empty. No Reanimated, no Skia, no Reanimated-quality gesture library. Yet.
- Rust learning curve. If your team doesn't know Rust, adoption cost is real. Start with Rust for JS devs.
- Hot reload is rougher. ~2s recompile vs RN's near-instant refresh.
Should You Migrate an Existing RN App?
Not yet. Wait 6–12 months for the ecosystem to fill in. Migrating a mature RN app today = rewriting half your dependencies.
Should You Start a New App With Astryx?
Only if: - You (or your team) are comfortable in Rust. - Perf and binary size are hard requirements. - You're okay writing a native module or two yourself.
For everyone else — Expo + RN in 2026 is still the pragmatic pick.
The Bigger Signal
Meta open-sourcing this is a bet that the JS-bridge era of cross-platform is ending. Between Astryx, Tauri, and the general Rust-eats-tooling trend, the next 3 years of mobile dev are going to look very different.
Bottom Line
Astryx isn't ready to replace React Native today. It might be in 2027. Star the repo, build a toy app, and be ready when the ecosystem catches up.
Watching the Astryx GitHub — I'll write a follow-up the moment there's a working gesture library.
